Via Porta Bakehouse
Northcote
Via Porta Bakehouse, Northcote has been conceived as a contemporary neighbourhood bakery that blends Italian warmth with Northcote’s creative, community-focused character. Celebrating artisanal sourdough, craftsmanship and connection, the new venue brings together honest materials, visible baking processes and a welcoming local atmosphere to create a destination that feels both authentically Via Porta and distinctly Northcote.
The interior is a restrained, tactile environment where warm timber, handmade tiles and soft natural light frame the daily ritual of breadmaking. Carefully considered materials and detailing express the bakery’s artisanal ethos, creating a setting that feels refined yet approachable, calm yet connected to the energy of High Street.
The site’s industrial cream-brick building and existing alfresco area offers a distinctive street presence, while providing a contained dining area away from the bustle of High Street. We looked to celebrate this distinction by setting the rawness of the building against a delicate, refined interior that speaks to the inherently Italian characteristics of the Via Porta brand.

Designed to support a fluid experience for both staff and patrons, the interior embraces an open spatial arrangement. Clear sightlines streamline operations and minimise staffing requirements, while intuitive circulation allows the space to adapt naturally throughout the day.
At the entrance, a central counter and pastry cabinet combine handmade tiles, stainless steel and monolithic forms to create a tactile focal point. A curated ‘grab and go’ fridge offers Via Porta’s take-home meals, while a previously underutilised area has been transformed into an intimate dining space. Timber benches invite patrons to perch or linger, with mirrored surfaces reflecting the activity of High Street.
A semi-open production area offers glimpses into the baking process, strengthening the connection between maker and customer and placing craftsmanship at the heart of the experience.
Responding to the nostalgic qualities of the site, the interior adopts a pared-back sensibility balanced by warmth and familiarity. Earthy toned concrete flooring complements timber, textured render and industrial stainless steel, harmonising with the existing brickwork.
There is a noticeable continuity between each store yet site-specific design elements allow the Via Porta narrative to naturally evolve.
Ultimately, Via Porta Bakehouse Northcote is a considered expression of place, craft and community. Rooted in the traditions of Italian baking yet shaped by the character of Northcote, the design creates a warm and enduring neighbourhood destination where thoughtful design, everyday rituals and the simple pleasure of good food come together.
